Racist remark, says Michael Tiang
Wan Ahmad Fayhsal’s statement that vernacular schools should be abolished to promote “strong national identity” is a racist remark that belongs to the last century, said Michael Tiang, Political Secretary to Chief Minister.
Tiang said such statement shows his ignorance of globalization and the development of digital world which embraces all cultures, all races, religions and languages for the advancement o the society. Wan Ahmad Fayhsal’s earlier statement that vernacular schools should be abolished was in fact is very kind of mentality that would destroy the virtue and diversity of our multi-racial multi-cultural multi-lingua Malaysian community.
“While in Sarawak both English and Malay are official languages. Sarawak government even assists the Chinese independent and vernacular schools by giving annual grants. In order to strengthen English language in Sarawak the state government will soon established public international schools all over Sarawak. As we all know that English language further connects us with the global education as well as improving our domestic education.
I cannot agree with how Malayan polticians always politicalise education issues to gain poltical mileage. Worse still, they have even influenced their Sarawakian agents in propagating the same unwarranted political sentiment in Sarawak. I urge Sarawakians to reject such poltical plays and rhetoric in Sarawak, ” he added.
