Dr Sim on implementation of Dog Licensing and Control (By-Law)
Sarawak will implement the Dog Licensing and Control (By-Law) soon to provide for a more effective control and licensing of dogs, said Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian in his winding up speech at the State Legislative Assembly yesterday.
Local authorities have also tightened their licence conditions to disallow food outlet operators to feed stray dogs and cats in their premises and the ministry had started a pilot project – House to House Vaccination – and to date have visited 7,688 houses and vaccinated 2,736 dogs under the project.
Of the number, he said 13,974 animal bites were reported in the state as at June 30 this year, while 4,153 patients were given anti-rabies vaccination. He said he also proposed to set up three regional dog pounds, in Kuching, Sibu and Miri to cater for the needs of the local authorities in the divisions.
Dr Sim revealed that rabies have caused the state millions of ringgit, adding that Sarawak could only be declared as ‘rabies free’ if there is no new human and canine positive case in the next two years.
