Hudud law definitely not for Sarawakians
Hudud law is definitely not for Sarawakians and we are concerned and uncomfortable that the issue has been brought up again by UMNO Information Chief Annuar Musa who stated that Barisan Nasional was open to cooperation with PAS to enact stricter Islamic punishment recently, said Secretary General for SUPP, Datuk Sebastian Ting.
Annuar has stated that UMNO would seek common ground for the sake of Muslims regarding RUU 355.
Ting pointed out that when a Private Member Bill proposed by PAS party President was tabled in Parliament last year, Sarawak BN leaders had joined forces to go against it thus it was deferred to the next session.
He said SUPP has always been firm and consistent and voiced out numerous times against the implementation of Hudud Law in Malaysia especially Sarawak. We had strongly opposed and Sarawak BN leaders had indeed instructed their respective members of Parliament to oppose and vote against the proposed amendment of the Shariah court.
The proposed amendment is against the provisions of the Federal Constitution and also against the safeguards provided for in the Malaysia Agreement 1963.
Ting added that Malaysia could not have two system of justice and Hudud was never part of the deal during the formation of Malaysia. The then Sarawak leaders did not agree to this and this proposal is totally unacceptable and SUPP will strongly oppose the introduction of Hudud laws.
We must all stand united to say a big ‘No’ to Hudud laws,” he added.
“We must not get swayed by their statements that Hudud does not affect non-Muslims because according to a constitution lawyer, Professor Shad Faruqi, he said that the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code II (1993) extends to consenting non-Muslims. This is a serious violation of the Constitution that proclaims Syariah Court has no jurisdiction on non-Muslims. I am totally agreed with the professor that jurisdiction is a matter of law and not of consent or acquiescence”.
