Tan Kai on the DAP
DAP owes the Chinese, Indian and non-Muslim Bumiputra communities an explanation, because apparently the party’s leaders seemed to have lost control of the situation (or were they ever in control?) when its Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng said DAP would seek the support of non-Muslim MPs from Barisan Nasional to curb PAS’s attempt to implement Hudud law in Kelantan by voting against the bill which PAS is determined to table in the parliament coming June.
SUPP Central Youth Chairman Tan Kai said no one can ever forget the fact that DAP leaders had, on numerous occasions, assured the Chinese, Indian and non-Muslim Bumiputra voters whenever concerns about Hudud laws in Malaysia were raised, that there was nothing to be afraid of as long as one does not break the laws. “DAP must be held responsible because it was their leaders who campaigned for PAS during the elections and DAP supporters were convinced to vote for PAS because of that. Were DAP leaders not aware of the potential risks and consequences or they were too power hungry that they chose to ignore them altogether?”
He further pointed out that the main concern of the Rakyat now is obviously PAS’s attempt to table a bill in parliament this coming June. “What the Chinese community wants now is for DAP to contain and withhold PAS’s Hudud agendas, not kicking the ball to the BN government. As long as PAS does not table the bill in parliament, there is no such need in the first place and implementation of Hudud laws in Kelantan will no longer be an issue”, he added. Since DAP was the one defending PAS’s Hudud agenda, telling the Chinese voters that they had nothing to fear, so DAP is obligated to make up for the mistakes the party has made.
Former MCA President once said, that supporting DAP was like raring a tiger because of the party’s close alliance with PAS. DAP kept arguing that the Chinese community had nothing to worry about since implementation of Hudud laws was never part of the agendas in their “Buku Jingga”. Deeply convinced that by supporting Pakatan Rakyat could eventually lead to the switching hands of the country’s administrative power, the Chinese voters ignored the potential problems Islamisation could lead to in a multi-racial and multi-religious nation like Malaysia. As a result to that, nearly 85% of the Malaysian Chinese voters gave their votes to Pakatan candidates in the previous elections. Ironically, the Chinese voters helped grind the knife for Pakatan Rakyat but now they find the knife is on their neck.
According to DAP’s Secretary General, who is also Chief Minister of Penang YB Lim Guan Eng, while there is mutual respect between the DAP and PAS, though the two parties do not agree with each other, DAP’s respect to PAS does not mean the party accepts the implementation of Hudud laws. How the three opposition parties, namely DAP, PAS and PKR, could join hands in order to achieve their respective political agendas is bitterly disappointing. They put the people’s interests at risks so their goals and ambitions could be realised.
“The Chinese communities never had any intention to offend the Muslim population in the country nor did they try to disrespect their religion, but at this particular moment, given the kind of social structure that we have in Malaysia, which is multi-racial and multi-religious, we cannot afford to have two sets of legal systems running the country at the same time because this will create potential frictions and confusions for example, when a Muslim and non-Muslim are involved, according to SUPP Bau Branch Youth Section Chairman Voon Boo Shin. He opined that the Chinese community now is more likely to favour BN government’s open and moderate administration and policies.
We must stand firm to defend our rights to religious freedom bestowed to us and protected by the Federal Constitution where Malaysia will remain a secular and democratic state.
