Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali

SUPP  Secretary General, Dato’ Sebastian Ting was dismayed at the Attorney-Generals’ Chambers (AGC) refusal to prosecute Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali for threatening to burn Malay language copies of the Bible, claiming that the remarks were not seditious.

Ting who is a lawyer said like all law abiding people, he was sadden by the decision made and that the AGC reasoning was not convincing and totally unacceptable. “There should be a more in-depth discussion on the issue,” he pointed out.

“A lot of people have voiced their discontentment that such statements be uttered and Ibrahim could get away from it. There were others who were charged under the Seditious Act despite not uttering such inflammatory statement,” said Ting.

AGC explained that Ibrahim Ali made the statement in the contest of the SMK Jelutong incident. After the context had been studied as a whole, Ibrahim Ali’s statement does not fall into the category of having seditious tendencies. As such, the AGC claimed that Ibrahim was merely out to defend the sanctity of Islam, citing that this was exactly what the right-wing leader had said when he issued the threat. AGC also claimed that Ibrahim had no intention to create religious discord but was merely defending the sanctity of Islam.

Ting said Ibrahim should be charged to deter future Malaysians from making unbecoming religious remarks. “Ours is a lovely country where we respect each other’s religions and culture. We should not let people like Ibrahim fan such remarks and get away with it. We should respect all religions in a multi racial country like Malaysia so that we all can live in peace and harmony,” he added.

Praising Sarawak Chief Minister, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem for his stand against religious bigots and barring them from entering Sarawak, Ting pointed out that the Chief Minister had set a good example of what a State leader should be.

He disallowed bigots to come and poisoned the minds of the vulnerable young generation in Sarawak. Sarawak has always live in harmony regardless of race, religion or culture. “We have indeed something to be proud of ourself,” said Ting.
