Fighting the rabies scourge in Miri
Piasau assemblyman, Datuk Sebastian Ting is thankful that that no human has been infected with rabies after the announcement of new rabies infected areas which included Piasa Jaya and Lutong Shell. He said it should remain this way and called to all to ‘fight’ the rabies together.
In a press conference yesterday after meeting Miri Division Health department, Ting he was sad that Miri is added to the list of the infected rabies area and called to all quarters to come together to combat the disease. The first thing, he said, is to ensure all the pets are vaccinated, a process which is free at the government vet centre.
His meeting with Director of Miri Hospital, Dr. Jack Wong, he said, was to come out with contingency plans to fight the rabies in Miri.
“It is us, the people, who can prevent the spread of the disease so let us play a role for us all. Those who have been bitten by either house pets or strays, please, go straight to the hospital for treatment,” said Ting.
He added that flyers were send out through social media on the prevention and what to do if bitten.
Ting added that that Miri Hospital and Miri Health Office are in a full state of preparedness for any outbreak and reassures the public that there will be enough vaccines at the hospital to cater for anyone who has received a dog bite.
Those who wished to get their dog vaccinated can get further details at 085-411866. For those who wished to report on strays or dogs with strange behaviour are to contact Miri City council hotline at 085-424111 or 0198960370.
