Chieng – those leaving not to drag party down

Sibu Sarawak United Peoples’ Party Vice Chairman Chieng Buong Tuong called on former party leaders who had deserted the party not to drag the party down with them as the party had done no wrong to them.

In a press conference this morning in Sibu, Chieng, who remain loyal to SUPP, was entrusted by the party Central Secretariat to lead the Sibu branch committee members with immediate effect.

Saddened by the recent happening, Chieng said party leaders who wish to leave the party should do so quietly and not to blame anyone for their actions. “SUPP is one of the oldest party in Sarawak and a party that has wronged no one. So should anyone who is not happy with the party, they should leave and let others take over and not to ask members to jump ship with them. Without these deserters, the party will still remain intact,” he said.

He lamented that there were allegation by some that hundreds or even thousands were leaving SUPP but those who really left are some of them seen in the media. “Before pointing an accusing finger, those who left should ask themselves how they had got into their present position if not for SUPP. Our founders and pioneers had sacrifices a lot for the party and the people. SUPP is one of the oldest party in Sarawak. We should be proud of our history and grow some conscience and gratitude for what the party has done for us,” he added.

Chieng said he received a letter from the Central Secretariat asking him to do two things – that is taking over the Sibu SUPP branch and the administration running of the branch. He said he was also asked to set up five branches which included Dudong, Bukit Assek, Pelawan, Bawang Assan and Nangka.

Saying that he would form the Bukit Assek branch first of which he is the Protem Chairman, Chieng said after sorting out the Bukit Assek, he would do so with the other four branches. He said when SUPP was not de-registered, that should be the beginning of working towards a unity path to make the party strong again and certainly not the time to abandon the ship. “With everyone putting in hard work with passion and strong willed spirit, I firmly believed that we will see better days ahead,” he said.

On Wednesday, Secretary general of the party, Dr. Sim Kui Hian wrote to Chieng to ask him to supervise the party’s affair and authorized him to take possession of all assets from all sub branches, convene the relevant meetings, besides making decision pertaining to SUPP Sibu branch business.

Sim also appealed to all loyal members in Sibu and the Central Region to rally behind SUPP Sibu branch and Bukit Assek Protem committee and the central region to remain a strong bastion of SUPP as envisaged by the party founders in 1959.
