Batang Lupar bridge not under Madani Government
SUPP Secretary-General and Sarawak Deputy Minister for Tourism, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, strongly condemned the Facebook page “ASM Network” for spreading false information by wrongly crediting the Batang Lupar Bridge project to the “Madani Government”, thereby misleading the public.
He pointed out that the Facebook page, which has approximately 46,000 followers, carries considerable influence and should therefore act responsibly by publishing verified information instead of openly spreading fake news and confusing the public.
He said the Batang Lupar Bridge project was approved during the administration of former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. However, following the change of the Federal Government in 2018, the project was cancelled by the former Pakatan Harapan administration.
“Despite the cancellation, the Sarawak Government decided to continue funding and implementing the project to ensure the people of Sarawak, especially those living in coastal areas, would benefit from it,” he said.
In a statement issued today, Ting said the Batang Lupar Bridge, measuring approximately 4.8 kilometres and costing about RM848 million, is among the longest river bridges in the country and was recently opened for public use. The bridge forms an important part of the Sarawak Coastal Road Network and Second Trunk Road projects.
“The Batang Lupar Bridge project is an important infrastructure initiative implemented by the Sarawak Government, and not a so-called ‘Madani Government project’ by the Federal Government. No party should distort facts for political propaganda or attempt to steal credit for the Sarawak Government’s development achievements,” he stressed.
He added that the Sarawak leadership, including Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, has consistently prioritised infrastructure development over the years, including roads, bridges, ports and public facilities, to improve regional connectivity and drive economic growth.
Ting said media organisations and social media platforms should act responsibly by verifying the authenticity of information before publishing it, instead of spreading inaccurate content for political motives or online traffic.
“The people deserve to know the truth. Any attempt to distort facts, mislead the public, or undermine the contributions of the Sarawak Government must be condemned,” he added.
He also urged the public to remain vigilant and refrain from sharing unverified online information in order to curb the spread of fake news.
