Sebastian: facts on the formation of Malaysia should be recorded
Piasau State Assemblyman, Datuk Sebastian Ting wished everyone a Happy Malaysia Day.
He said 16th September 2018 is an extremely important day for Malaysia as 55 years ago on this date in1963, Malaysia was “born” with the signing of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) The signatories were United Kingdom, Federated States of Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore.
“Indeed, Federated States of Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak and Singapre formed Malaysia. Singapore was separated in 1965. Most Malaysians do not know that Sabah and Sarawak DID NOT JOIN Malaysia but FORMED Malaysia, because history books continue to teach our children that Sabah and Sarawak joined Malaysia which is totally wrong. We will continue to request that the correct facts on the formation of Malaysia are properly recorded and stated in our history books,” he said.
With the separation of Singapore from Malaysia, Ting added that there are now only three nations, namely Federated States of Malaya, Sabah and Sarawak that formed Malaysia under the MA63.
Indeed without Sabah and Sarawak there would not have been a country called Malaysia.
For completeness and for greater understanding on the formation of Malaysia, these four documents are relevant
(i) Cobbold Commission
(ii) Inter Governmental Commission Report
(iii) Malaysia Agreement 1963 and
(iv) Malaysia Act 1963 ( Chapter 35) (This Act was passed in British Parliament, United Kingdom)
All Sarawakians should or must know these three important dates
(i) 22nd July 1963 ( 722) (Sarawak Independence Day as Gazetted by Sarawak Government. A public holiday in Sarawak )
(ii) 31st August 1957 (831) (the Independence Day of Federated States of Malaya (Nothing to do with Sabah and Sarawak )
(iii) 16th September 1963 ( 916) Malaysia Day. Formation of Malaysia.
We must continue to value and treasure the Peace and Harmony that we have been enjoying since the formation of Malaysia, he said.
