Press release by Michael Tiang on McDonald’s outlets
McDonald’s outlets in Miri today received a directive from the head office that all outlets shall take down displayed notices of allowing only halal-certified cakes to be brought into the fast food premises, according to Michael Tiang, the political secretary to the Chief Minister of Sarawak.
Tiang commented that such prompt action by McDonald’s constitutes a wise move as well as a positive response to the strong objections among Sarawak people towards its recent unpopular policy.
According to Tiang, earlier on McDonald’s outlets in Miri did display such notices allowing only halal-certified cakes to be inside their premises. But since the outlets had taken down the said notices today, customers are allowed to bring any kinds of cakes to celebrate birthday inside their fast food premises.
Tiang in his press release today stressed that he urged McDonald’s HQ not to extend its latest policy disallowing non-halal certified cakes to be brought into its outlets to Sarawak, as such policy is not welcomed in a racial and religious harmonious society in Sarawak.
Tiang informed the press that as far as he knows, Miri’s McDonald’s outlets were the only ones in Sarawak followed the footsteps of their Semenanjung counterpart to display the relevant notices at their premises. However today they had received a further instruction from the HQ to take down such notice so as to compliment the tolerant spirit in Sarawak.
Tiang emphasized that a consumer is entitled to reject any unreasonable commercial requirements, and if necessary, the discriminated consumers shall defend their consumer rights by way of boycotting such discriminative commercial practice.
Tiang stressed that it is always the Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem’s stand that racial or religious extremism have no place in Sarawak as Sarawak practises a culture of tolerance, moderation and mutual understanding towards all races and religions.
Regards,
Michael Tiang
