SUPP Central Youth Publicity Chief Milton Foo handed over a memorandum prepared by SUPP Pelawan Secretary Michael Tiang to Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Najib Abdul Razak during his last visit to Kuching. In the presence of SUPP Secretary General Datuk Sebastian Ting, PM received the Memorandum.

Earlier on SUPP Youth Central Publicity Chief Milton Foo, together with SUPP Pelawan Secretary Michael Tiang, pointed out during a press conference held in July, that the content in Unit 6 titled “Lahirnya Sebuah Negara Baharu” of the latest KSSR (Primary School standard curriculum) history textbook is totally incorrect and misleading.

They said, every Malaysian, including primary school students, has a right to know the complete national history. Such erroneous and misleading history textbook would only cause more confusion on our students about Malaysian history.

Both Foo and Tiang stressed that history are facts that should not be changed or twisted. This is particularly important and fundamental that on the 16th day of September, 1963 Sarawak formed Malaysia together with Malaya, Sabah and Singapore as a strategic and equal partner.

“We are very much concerned that when the history of the formation of Malaysia in 1963 was omitted in the textbooks, our next generation of Sarawakians will be learning a wrong history of our country,” said Foo.

They said, that chapter of the KSSR history syllabus in question only focuses on the independence of Malaya Federation. Not a single word mentions about “Malaysia”, let alone how Sabah and Sarawak came to form Malaysia.

The national history shall be respected and preserved in our education system, said Foo. He was concerned that the present history textbook has wrongly defined our country and therefore created confusing history which is totally unnecessary.

Tiang also revealed to the press that last month both he and Milton Foo took a trip to Kuala Lumpur to meet the newly appointed Assistant Minister Chong Sin Woon to bring this matter to the Ministry’s attention that Malaysia is a nation formed by Malaya, Sarawak and Sabah. The erroneous KSSR history syllabus would only generate a wrong impression among students that Sarawak is a colony to Malaya, not a partner to the formation of Malaysia.

The relevant chapter of “Lahirnya negara baharu” is all about the history of Malaya. The existence of Malaya lasted from 1957 till 1963. After the formation of Malaysia, the Federation of Malaya is no longer in existence. The most significant date of September 16, 1963 the Malaysia Day was not mentioned in the said textbook. Tiang emphasized that if there was no September 16, 1963, there would be no Malaysia and this is what Sarawak people always want this date to be highlighted by the government.

SUPP appealed to PM about the omission of Malaysia independence history in KSSR history textbook.
