There were never short of supply and teaching was regarded as an honourable profession. In the old days, teachers not only teach our young but they helped parents to discipline their teachers with support from parents,” he said.

Over the years, Ting observed that that has changed. There were less and less Sarawakians being hired to teach in their own area.

He said most of the Peninsula teachers came over to Sarawak for their posting and what I learned from the authority soon after that, they would apply to go back to their hometown. “This is not fair to the students or schools concerned as temporary teachers would naturally not put in their all effort to educate the students unlike their own. This is just human nature,” said Ting.

He hoped that the Education department would seriously look into the dwindling of Sarawakians teachers being post back.

Ting also pointed out that there were Sarawakians who were unable to get into the teaching profession despite the fact that they were qualified. “We are not even talking about race here. We just want our own people to give the best to the children who are the future leaders. I really hope this will be done to curb the imbalance of posting of teachers,” he added.

Dato‘ Sebastian Ting

Education is one of the 18 points when Sarawak formed Malaysia and this is one of the area where Sarawak would be very much in charge and something the Education department should seriously look into.
