riverfront transformation in Batu Kawa, linking existing and future developments into a continuous three kilometre scenic corridor.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the bridge would connect the Kampung Rantau Panjang riverbank protection project with the Batu Kawa Riverbank Park, creating a seamless walkway along the river while improving accessibility between communities.

He said the project would also strengthen ties between the Malay village settlement and the Chinese old town area of Batu Kawa, reflecting the spirit of inclusivity and nation building.

According to Dr Sim, consultants and surveyors are currently finalising plans for the second phase of the riverbank protection works, with the project expected to be called for tender by the end of the year.

In the meantime, immediate erosion control measures valued at RM200,000 will be implemented at Kampung Rantau Panjang to safeguard the riverbank while permanent protection works are being prepared.

The measures were agreed upon during a site visit attended by Department of Irrigation and Drainage Sarawak director Datu Ahmad Denney Ahmad Fauzi and his team.

Dr Sim said the first phase of the riverbank protection project, covering 450 metres, was originally awarded in 2019 for about RM8.7 million but was delayed by rising construction material costs during the Covid 19 pandemic.

The project was later retendered in 2022, with the lowest bid reaching RM11.6 million, and was completed in late 2023 after 18 months of construction.

He also thanked Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for approving a RM31 million allocation ceiling for the remaining 500 metres of riverbank protection works.
Dr Sim noted that escalating construction costs since the pandemic have significantly increased the overall expenditure required for riverbank protection projects across the state.

<a
