The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Public Complaints Bureau has strengthened its efforts to tackle online scams and illegal moneylending by drawing on the experience of Michael Chong Ten Soo, who shared lessons from 38 years of handling public complaints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SUPP Public Complaints Bureau chief Milton Foo said Chong’s extensive experience dealing with loansharks, online scams and other public complaints provided valuable guidance to bureau members, community leaders, councillors and party members during a dialogue at the party’s headquarters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Foo described Chong as a prominent figure in Malaysia’s public complaints service, saying his long standing commitment to helping those in need had earned him public recognition for championing the rights of ordinary Malaysians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Michael Chong’s experience and his commitment to helping those who have been wronged have given reassurance to many Malaysians over the years. His practical knowledge is invaluable as we continue assisting members of the public facing similar challenges,” he said today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Foo, cases involving online scams and illegal moneylending received by the bureau during the first half of this year increased by about 40 per cent compared with the same period last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said many victims were small business owners from Kuching, Sarikei, Sibu, Bintulu and Miri who turned to unlicensed lenders or online loan offers because of financial difficulties, only to become trapped in deeper debt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Foo urged the public to avoid trusting online loan or investment advertisements circulated on social media, warning that scam syndicates use intimidation and illegal tactics to exploit victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the dialogue, Chong outlined practical approaches for handling loanshark harassment and scam cases, stressing the importance of acting quickly by lodging police reports, preserving evidence and seeking assistance from complaint bureaus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also highlighted the important role of the media in helping resolve certain public interest cases by drawing attention to injustices faced by victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chong said prompt action and coordinated efforts among victims, the authorities, complaint bureaus and the media could help protect the public from scams and illegal moneylending activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
