Since then, I have continued to conduct regular site visits, engage with residents and work closely with the relevant agencies to identify and resolve drainage problems,” he said.

Yap stressed that the Sarawak Government had already approved a comprehensive Flood Mitigation Project for the Stampin Resettlement Scheme with an estimated cost of RM350 million.

He said the project is designed to provide a long term solution to recurring flooding and drainage issues affecting about 1,503 households and more than 9,000 residents.

“Over the past two years, I have attended multiple stakeholder meetings organised by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage, conducted site inspections with DID officers, consultants and community leaders, and consistently pushed for the project’s implementation,” he said.
Yap also pointed out that the project had already progressed beyond the planning stage.

He said the Department of Irrigation and Drainage called for tenders for Phase 1 of the Stampin Flood Mitigation Project on May 21, 2026, with the tender closing on June 24, 2026.

“Following the tender closing date, approximately one month will be required for tender evaluation before the contract can be awarded. Based on the current schedule, physical works are expected to commence by the end of August 2026,” he said.
Yap added that utility relocation works involving Sarawak Energy and telecommunications infrastructure were already being coordinated as part of the preparations for the main construction phase.

He said it was inaccurate to suggest that nothing had been done for more than three decades, noting that significant planning, engineering studies, upgrading works and financial commitments had already been undertaken.

“Complex flood mitigation projects involving hundreds of millions of ringgit require detailed technical studies, utility relocations, environmental assessments and proper engineering design. They cannot be implemented overnight,” he said.
Yap said residents deserved accurate information and practical solutions rather than political narratives.
“As the assemblyman for Kota Sentosa, I remain committed to closely monitoring the implementation of the Stampin Flood Mitigation Project and working with DID, MBKS, utility providers and all relevant stakeholders to ensure that this long awaited project is delivered efficiently for the benefit of residents,” he said.

Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap has called for a fact based and constructive discussion on the long standing drainage and flooding issues in the Stampin Resettlement Scheme, while responding to recent remarks by Michael Kong.
