Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap Yau Sin today expressed disappointment over the recent stance taken by Democratic Action Party Sarawak in opposing the proposed increase in State seats, describing the move as an important step towards strengthening Sabah and Sarawak\u2019s position in seeking greater Parliamentary representation in line with the spirit of the Malaysia Agreement 1963.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said the proposal to increase Sarawak State seats is a strategic measure to ensure the state\u2019s voice is stronger at both the State and Federal levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt is therefore disappointing that DAP Sarawak appears to take a position that could undermine this broader objective of restoring Sarawak\u2019s rightful representation in Parliament,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yap further pointed out that DAP Sarawak currently has five Members of Parliament in the Federal Government, and with that representation comes responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cInstead of opposing or casting doubt on measures that strengthen Sarawak\u2019s long term political standing, DAP Sarawak should focus on fulfilling the promises made in its manifesto and consistently advocate for Sarawak\u2019s rights and autonomy,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added that Sarawakians deserve clarity, accountability, and results, noting that with five MPs in the Federal Government, DAP Sarawak is already in a position to carry out its check and balance role effectively by pushing for meaningful reforms that benefit the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe rakyat have every right to question whether their actions today are aligned with the interests and aspirations of Sarawak,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yap also reiterated that any effort to enhance Sarawak\u2019s representation, whether through State seat increases or future Parliamentary seat adjustments, must be supported in good faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThese efforts are crucial in ensuring Sarawak\u2019s voice is not diluted, but strengthened within the Federation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the issue of electoral delineation, he emphasised that the Election Commission of Malaysia must act with transparency, fairness, and independence, adding that any redelineation exercise must reflect Sarawak\u2019s unique geographical and demographic realities and must not be perceived as disadvantaging the state.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
