Sarawak United Peoples Party Secretary General Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew expressed disappointment over Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim\u2019s response to the Unified Examination Certificate issue, saying it did not meaningfully address the long standing aspirations and educational needs of students and parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ting said while Bahasa Melayu is rightly recognised as the national language under the Federal Constitution, this should not be used as a reason to dismiss the recognition of the UEC, which is already accepted by many countries and internationally renowned universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said if the federal government maintains that UEC recognition involves constitutional constraints, the responsible and democratic approach would be to table a constitutional amendment in Parliament to allow open debate and a clear decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cRecognition of the UEC is not a political manoeuvre or a racial issue. It is a major education issue that affects the future of our children and their competitiveness over the next decade,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ting stressed that education policies must be forward looking and reflect global realities, noting that multilingual abilities, including proficiency in Chinese, are increasingly important in international trade, education and economic cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also pointed out that Sarawak has long taken a pragmatic approach by recognising the UEC, a policy introduced by the late Chief Minister Pehin Sri Adenan Satem and continued by Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, with consistent financial support for independent Chinese secondary schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added that independent Chinese schools in Sarawak also enrol indigenous students, and that mastering additional languages provides broader opportunities rather than limiting students\u2019 potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ting urged the federal government to stop politicising the UEC issue and to re examine the matter with a more open, inclusive and forward looking mindset, placing the interests of students and the nation\u2019s future first.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
