Investigations confirmed it was merely a mistake, yet a short video clip triggered an overreaction that led to business closures, public anxiety, and a heavy police presence to maintain order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf one truly loves the nation, the right approach is to communicate with the people calmly and constructively, not to incite fear. For example, when I see the Sarawak flag displayed incorrectly, I would politely remind the shop owner, \u2018The black colour should be on top,\u2019 and they would naturally make the correction. That is the mature way to handle it,\u201d Chia said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He stressed that if someone deliberately burns, insults, or defames the national flag, stern action must be taken to defend national dignity. However, when genuine mistakes are blown out of proportion for political mileage, it not only unsettles the public but also leaves foreign visitors puzzled and even amused by the country\u2019s politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chia criticised certain West Malaysian politicians who often exploit racial issues or flag-related incidents as propaganda to project themselves as \u201cheroes.\u201d He described such behaviour as shameful and damaging to the nation\u2019s image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMalaysia is a diverse and inclusive country, and the Department of National Unity has consistently promoted racial harmony. Unfortunately, some politicians act in ways that go against this spirit, which is very disappointing. In contrast, Sarawak has long upheld cooperation among communities and maintained social harmony while driving development forward. That is what real political maturity looks like,\u201d he remarked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that hanging a flag wrongly is a small issue that does not warrant unnecessary drama.
