While I have no issue with criticism, it is disappointing that YB Chong continues to rely on his assistant to front his political battles instead of taking responsibility himself as both an elected Member of Parliament and State Assemblyman,” Yap said in a statement today.

“If YB Chong genuinely stands by the allegations made, he should be forthright enough to address me as State Assemblyman for Kota Sentosa and the people of Sarawak directly, rather than hiding behind his assistant,” he stressed.

Touching on demands raised by Kong regarding an alleged Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigation, Yap said such questions were misplaced as MACC is a federal agency.

“MACC is a federal agency under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 and comes under Putrajaya. The Sarawak Premier has no legal authority over MACC investigations and is not the federal minister responsible for the Commission. The proper authority to address such questions is the MACC Chief Commissioner and the Federal Government where Pakatan Harapan, Chong’s own coalition, currently holds power,” he said.

Yap said that GPS has demonstrated its commitment to good governance by passing the Ombudsman Ordinance, establishing an independent body to investigate complaints against state agencies and government-linked companies.

“This is a concrete reform that enhances transparency and integrity. It is GPS that has delivered real safeguards for Sarawak, while DAP has delivered little beyond repeated press statements,” he said.

Yap also posed seven questions to Chong, including why DAP failed to defend Sarawak’s rights under MA63, why oil royalty pledges were not fulfilled, and why political appointments continued in federal GLCs despite promises to end the practice.

“Sarawak deserves political discourse based on facts, not theatre. Personal attacks by assistants cannot distract from the truth: accountability must come from elected leaders themselves. If YB Chong Chieng Jen has real evidence, he should bring it through the proper legal channels and answer for himself,” Yap added.

Kota Sentosa State Assemblyman, Wilfred Yap asked MP Stampin, Chong Chieng Jen to personally respond to political issues instead of relying on his assistant, Michael Kong. “I take note of the recent attack made against me by Mr Michael Kong Feng Nian, special assistant to YB Chong Chieng Jen.
