The history of Sarawak\u2019s liberation from Japanese occupation during World War II must continue to be remembered and shared with the younger generation to ensure it is never forgotten.
Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, said many are unaware of the hardships endured during that period, including the plight of prisoners of war at the Batu Lintang Camp, which once held around 3,000 captives during the Japanese occupation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the story reflects the immense suffering of the people of Sarawak at that time, marking one of the darkest chapters in the state\u2019s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat is Sarawak\u2019s history, and we must ensure these stories are remembered and passed on, so that the younger generation will always recall those who came to help us during those difficult times and liberated us from the darkness of Japanese rule. We must always be grateful for their service and sacrifice,\u201d Ting said when speaking at the 80th Anniversary Dinner of Liberation from Japanese Occupation on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that the event is filled with emotion as it recalls the pain experienced by Sarawakians during that era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ting also stressed that Sarawak today remains thankful for the peace and harmony it enjoys despite its religious and cultural diversity, a blessing made possible through the sacrifices of those who fought to free the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
