Dato Ir. Lo Khere Chiang, Assemblyman for Batu Kitang, has criticised the Director of the National Archives for declaring the 1957 Proclamation of Independence as Malaysia\u2019s \u201cbirth certificate,\u201d stressing that Malaysia was only formed in 1963.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNo amount of gold leaf, carvings, or poetic words can change the truth: the Proclamation of Independence 1957 is not Malaysia\u2019s birth certificate. It is Malaya\u2019s,\u201d Lo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He emphasised that 31 August 1957 marked Malaya\u2019s independence, while Sarawak and North Borneo gained independence in July and August 1963 respectively, before forming Malaysia with Malaya and Singapore on 16 September 1963.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis is why Malaysia\u2019s birthday cannot possibly be 31 August 1957. There was no Malaysia then,\u201d he said, warning that to conflate the two events \u201cerases the distinct identities of Sabah and Sarawak.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lo commended Sarawak\u2019s Yang di-Pertua Negeri, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi, for clarifying that 31 August commemorates Malaya\u2019s independence, while 16 September marks Malaysia\u2019s true formation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He further linked the misrepresentation of history to longstanding grievances faced by Sarawak. \u201cWhen resources were taken, it was done in a flash. Yet when it comes to restoring our rights, Sarawak is told to wait endlessly,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lo concluded, \u201cMalaysia\u2019s true birth certificate is the Malaysia Agreement 1963. Malaysia\u2019s birthday is 16 September 1963. And Malaysia\u2019s real National Day should rightly be 16 September, not 31 August.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
