The 22 month old Yvonne Paw who was born with bilateral cochlear aplasia and is completely deaf, urgently needs an auditory brainstem implant surgery to have a chance at hearing. However, the cost of the procedure is beyond what her family can afford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sarawak Deputy Minister for Tourism and Miri Cochlear Implant Association chairman, Datuk Sebastian Ting appealed to the public to come forward and donate to help raise the remaining RM95,000 needed for the implant device and surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at a press conference held by SUPP Piasau Branch, Ting explained that Yvonne from Batu Niah, was diagnosed with the rare congenital condition after her parents noticed she was unable to make any sounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said further examinations at Miri Hospital confirmed the absence of cochlear structures in both ears, resulting in total hearing loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This little girl cannot hear her parents\u2019 voices or even her own cries. The only option for her to gain the ability to hear and eventually speak is through this critical surgery, which needs to be done as soon as possible,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The surgery is scheduled for August 16 at Borneo Medical Centre in Kuching and will be carried out by a team of ENT and neurosurgical specialists. The total cost is RM145,000, including RM95,000 for the implant device and between RM35,000 to RM50,000 for the surgery itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So far, the family has raised RM12,000 and received RM50,000 from the Human Resources Development Fund, leaving a shortfall of RM95,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ting said that while this type of surgery is rarely performed in Malaysia, global data shows a success rate of between 79 and 93.3 percent, with many patients gaining the ability to perceive sound and even develop basic speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The girl\u2019s parents, Paw Kek Chuong and Wong Siew Chin, expressed hope that kind-hearted individuals would step forward to give their daughter the opportunity to live a normal life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
