SUPP Secretary General, Datuk Sebastian Ting said SUPP is pleased and welcomes the passing of anti-hopping law on the 28th July 2022 which involved amending the Federal Constitution to include anti-hopping provisions. It is certainly a big win for democracy.
He believed the majority, if not, all the right thinking Malaysians, are of the opinion that this anti hopping law is long overdue.
“We feel and think that It is important and certainly is necessary to strengthen our country\u2019s political stability by putting a stop on irresponsible elected representatives switching their allegiances to suit their own personal interest, that in so doing tarnishes the sanctity of people\u2019s vote and choice at the election. The people ‘s trust and confidence in voting their candidates at the elections, be it Parliamentary or State elections, will now be better safeguarded and not lightly be betrayed. The unhealthy and pathetic ‘frog culture’ , be it intelligent or otherwise, will be put to stop.
Under this anti-hopping law, there are some exemptions for MPs not losing their seats such as when their political parties have been de-registered, being appointed as Speakers of the House, being sacked from their political parties or voting against their party\u2019s wishes, ” he added.
Ting said the exemptions are both necessary, practical and being pragmatic as they allow MPs some leeway to vote what they believe is right for the community they represent and for the country. They are not being ‘forced’ by law to blindly follow their parties ‘s wishes without their own thoughts or question.
“SUPP would like to record our sincere appreciation and gratitude to all who were involved in preparing the constitution amendment bill, especially Law Minister Dato Sri Dr. Haji Wan Junaidi Bin Tuanku Jaafar and his magnificent team. Congratulations for a job well done. This is because in addition to this important anti hopping law, the same Law Minister Dato Sri Dr. Wan Junaidi last year, after 58 years since the formation of Malaysia on the 16th September 1963, successfully introduced milestone amendments to our Federal Constitution Article 1(2) and Article 160(2) to restore equal status of Sarawak and Sabah by redefining the Federation of Malaysia to be based on the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and the Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) Report, ” he stated.
With the above mentioned two important Amendments, Ting said, we, as Sarawakians, are indeed truly very proud of the Law Minister Dato Sri Dr Wan Junaidi for his amazing Achievements because he is also Anak Sarawak.
Further, we are of the opinion that Law Minister perhaps, is the most distinguished Law Minister to date, since the formation of Malaysia.
