{"id":30440,"date":"2022-07-14T12:36:00","date_gmt":"2022-07-14T04:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.suppnewsportal.com\/main\/?p=30440"},"modified":"2022-07-28T12:40:14","modified_gmt":"2022-07-28T04:40:14","slug":"beware-of-stray-dog-bites-says-dr-sim-kui-hian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.suppnewsportal.com\/main\/?p=30440","title":{"rendered":"Beware of stray dog bites, says Dr Sim Kui Hian"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sarawak Deputy Minister, Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian advised members of the public should be wary of stray dogs as there is an ongoing  rabies outbreak in Sarawak. <br> <br>He said in January this year, the number of people bitten numbered 451, February 417, March 451, April 359, May 426 and June 500. <br> <br>In the six months, there was a total of  2604 persons bitten. There is an average of over 400 people who were bitten by dog monthly in Sarawak. <br> <br>In the month of June, it hit the highest since January this year with 500 persons bitten by dogs either their pets or strays. <br> <br>On the breakdown of dog bites in Southern Zone in the last six months, Kuching has the highest number of dog bites numbering 564, Lundu 17 and Au 11.<br> <br>&#8220;Do beware of stray dogs, the number of reported dog bite cases monthly is not to be taken lightly! We in the Government has put in a lot of efforts as well as teamwork from members of public to continue for the elimination of rabies as it is a deadly disease. We tried to give free dog anti-rabies vaccine in infected areas&#8221; he said. <br> <br>So far since 2017,a total of 208,886 dogs have been vaccinated.<br> <br>Dr Sim reminded dog owners that vaccination is a must annually and to help eliminated the disease, pet owners must ensure that their dogs are given jabs yearly. <br> <br>He said for anyone bitten or scratched by a rabid dog, please wash the wound with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes and immediately seek medical treatment at the nearest clinic or hospital.<br> <br>Rabies was found in July 2017 when two siblings died of the disease after they were bitten by their neighbor pet in Serian.
