When he returned from Australia, in 1998, by 2001, he set up the Cardiology Department of SGH. The department had progressively evolved into a cardiology centre (SGH Heart Centre) with its own standalone facilities in Kota Samarahan and a recognised training centre for cardiothoracic surgeons of which he is the advisor at SGH Clinical Research Centre and also a board member of Clinical Research Malaysia (CRM), as well as an adjunct professor at the Faculty of Medicine & Health Science, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS).

Known to be one of the most vocal and consistent proponents for more Sarawakian autonomous power and rights, the son of the late Tan Sri Datuk Amar Sim Kheng Hong who was the Deputy Chief Minister of Sarawak from 1974 to 1991, Dr. Sim said he was following his father around since his childhood learning the trade of politics.

His famous reason for joining politics instead of being a full time cardiologist was that he could build more hospitals as a politician to cater to the growing population of Sarawak. Still living with his mother, Dr. Sim is married to Associate professor, Datin Enn Ong. The couple have two sons.

Today, Dr. Sim not only builds hospitals but infrastructures for his constituency bring vast development to Batu Kawah.

Among the projects were the upgrading of the Drainage system of RM244 million which included flood mitigation, embankment and river cleaning (20km).

The road maintenance and upgrading of RM30 million included traffic light, road expansion, install guardrail & barrier, road kerb & footpath, bridge (300km) , gravel road upgrading which is 41 KM long reaching 1,200 houses, 900 street lights and 53 CCTV.

The Water pipe upgrading was extended to the night housing area with a total value of MR2.5 million while for Recreation and Sports Facilities, there were five parks and three futsal built costing RM13.5 million. Since the pandemic, Agriculture subsidies were also given to farmers amounting to RM2.6 million, kampung road upgrading RM 3.9 million, Unifor for temple and churches RM4.0 million and Batu Kawah Riverside park RM 22.8 million.

To cater to the needs of the community, Dr. Sim also made it a reality to have 11 Dewan multiple halls, one sports and community hall constructed costing RM 19 million. He also helped to upgrade the KK Batu Kawah and 1 Malaysia Klinik including the program penambahbaikan Rumah Rakyat Miskin involving 185 houses. Klinik Kesihatan Batu Kawah upgrading came in at the right time as the area was opened up to cater to the emergency of covid 19 vaccination where in six weeks, 7,000 doses were administered.

Always looking into the plight of the people, Dr. Sim said he has always hoped to construct more affordable housing in Batu Kawah as house demand and prices skyrocketed and Batu Kawah is one of the liveable areas.

Dr. Sim’s latest and newest landmark in Batu Kawa is the Riverbank Park, commenced in 2018 which was to be completed in four phases and will transform the landscape of the riverine area. A skybridge, eight-storey high, will connect two structures at the park from Batu Kawa Old Town to Kampung Rantau Panjang spanning 15.6 acres.

The first of its kind in the state, the 30 meter high Sky Window equivalent to 10 storey high building can be accessed via staircase or lift for one to enjoy the spectacular view of vibrant Batu Kawah.

Dr. Sim said without this landscape project, the area would just be a piece of wasteland located under a road bridge but now, this wasteland is being transformed into a park, with unique design and a total of 2km walkway from one end, the Chinese temple at the Batu Kawa Old Bazaar all the way to Kampung Rantau Panjang on the other end.

The Batu Kawah Riverbank Park project is divided into five phases with its first and second phase funded by the state government at a cost of RM8.8 million and Padawan Municipal Council is the implementing agency. The first two phases are completed.

The Riverbank park, , he said, will not only be for Batu Kawah residents or Kuching folks to enjoy but also a tourist landmark for the city.

On the difficulty of carrying out his ministry work, Dr. Sim who is also advisor to SDMC said he was thankful he is a doctor so he understands how pandemic would affect the public.

He went daily to his social media platform to educate the public on the ‘do’s’ and ‘donts’ of how to deal with the pandemic.

Dr. Sim said he himself did a self test regularly to ensure that he is given a clean bill of health as he did not want people around him to be infected.

He said following the SOP advisory from SDMC and ensuring that one must be hygienic is a good way to keep covid 19 away.

Although there were constraints of working with pandemics, Dr. Sim said he managed somehow and adapted to the new norms.

Prof Dato Sri Dr. Sim Kui Hian is all ready to face the battle of the coming State election as since winning his first round of N.14, Batu Kawah, he has worked non-stop bringing development and upgrading of lives to the residents of Batu Kawah.
