Piasau State Assemblyman, Datuk Sebastian Ting urged members of the public not to condemn those who arrived to take food from the food bank at SUPP Piasau saying that some may look rich and seems like taking advantages but no one knows the real tragic story behind the people who have to come to take food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said they had planned the food bank which started on July 3 for 20 days was planned by his branch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ting himself joined in to cook at times and organised food stuff. The Piasau members were there daily to give out food starting from 10 am until 1.30 pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are people who turn up early at 8 am. We also advised them that if they have taken a bag of rice, then they can take different items the next days as there may be some who need that rice of bag. Besides, we also let them choose to take either a bag of rice or a tray of eggs. Many would also take bread, sugar, cooking oil, canned food while daily paid workers would come for a warm meal cooked by Piasau members. The food was fairly distributed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ting was also disheartened when he heard two brothers in their early 20s who came over from Batu Niah to work in Miri resorted to stealing food as their jobs were scrapped. The duo had gone hungry for two days before they decided to steal the food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two were arrested by police and Ting came to their aid after he heard about them. He said the police were kind to give them a warning and he send them back with food supplies and necessities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are many untold stories of the suffering of the people. That is why we decided to come up with the 20 days food bank. Many Miriams came forward to give cash which we used to buy according to the needs of the people and some will bring over food,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the 20 days ration which was all donated by the people for the people, Ting said he estimated it to be over RM80,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He thanked all those involved including the kind donors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
