The Old Josephians\u2019\u00a0Association (OJA) Kuching will be organising the 3rd consecutive Ora\u00a0Et Labora Run themed \u2018Save Mill Hill\u2019 on the 27th July 2019. As\u00a0before, the Run will start at the premises of SMK St. Joseph, Kuching,\u00a0at 6.00am.<\/p>\n
The Ora Et Labora Run aims at raising funds for the restoration of\u00a0the Mill Hill Block.\u00a0 \u00a0Apart from that, the Run is an opportune time\u00a0for a reunion for ex-students to gather and render service to their\u00a0alma mater.<\/p>\n
According to Datuk Prof. Dr. Sim Kui Hian who is the OJA President,\u00a0\u201cThis year, we hope to raise RM100,000 through the annual Run. An\u00a0estimated sum of RM3.7 million is expected to complete restoration\u00a0works to enable the use of classrooms for lessons. At present the two\u00a0front blocks are out of bounds for all as it is deemed unsafe. Prior\u00a0to this, funds raised from annual dinners and contributions by former\u00a0students have accumulated RM620,000 which will be channelled into the\u00a0Mill Hill Block Restoration Fund.\u201d<\/p>\n
During the launching of Ora Et Labora Run 2019, Dr. Sim presented a\u00a0RM620,000 cheque Chairman of SJS Mill Hill Block Restoration\u00a0Committee, Father Felix Au.\u00a0 Dr. Sim also handed two cheques worth\u00a0RM10,000 each to SMK St Joseph and St Joseph Private School for the\u00a0school to fund student\u2019s extra-curricular activities. The sum was\u00a0raised during the Ora Et Labora 2018.<\/p>\n
Dr. Sim, who is also the Minister of Local Government and Housing\u00a0added that generous contribution by company and individuals are most\u00a0welcome to assist in the restoration of Mill Hill Block. OJA hopes to\u00a0start the restoration of Mill Hill Blockin August 2018 in phases and\u00a0target to complete the restorationin 2021.<\/p>\n
On a side note, Father Felix Au who is also the Chairman of SMK St\u00a0Joseph Board of Management added that the Mill Hill central building\u00a0was constructed back in 1894 under the supervision of Fr Anthony\u00a0Haidegger, the then Principal of St Joseph\u2019s School. It was officially\u00a0declared open by Rajah Charles Brooke, on 21 December 1894. The\u00a0January 1895 issue of Sarawak Gazette described it as \u201cthe largest\u00a0private work carried out in 1894 and indeed the largest building in\u00a0Kuching\u201d. In 1927, to meet the growing student population, the two\u00a0wings, each three storeys, were added. These three buildings continued\u00a0to serve the school well and stood as a historical legacy.<\/p>\n
And responding to the rumour that SMK St Joseph would be absorbed to\u00a0become part of St. Joseph\u2019s Private School, Father Felix clarified\u00a0that SMK St Joseph will continue to run independently a public school.\u00a0It is noteworthy, however, that SK Joseph (primary school) will cease\u00a0running after 2020. The primary school facilities will be taken over\u00a0by Joseph\u2019s Private School completely in 2021.<\/p>\n
OJA is expecting at least 2,000 runners comprising current students,\u00a0alumni and the public to take part in this year\u2019s event.\u00a0 The Run is\u00a0divided into the 3km Fun Jog\/Walk for families and children, 5km Fun\u00a0Run and 10km competitive run where we have two categories; Open\u00a0Category (Men and Women) for the public and to make it more\u00a0interesting this year, the Team Challenge Category which is an\u00a0inter-school competition. The first four arriving at the finishing\u00a0line clinch a challenge trophy.\u00a0 The trophy will be kept by the school\u00a0after winning for two consecutive years. The Josephians\u2019 Category for\u00a0existing students, and alumni remains the same as last year\u2019s.<\/p>\n
All participants who finish the run will receive finisher medalsand\u00a0for the 10km competitive run, the top 5 finishers will receive\u00a0additional cash prizes.<\/p>\n
The registration fees per person are RM45 for the 3km Fun Jog\/Walk and\u00a05km Fun Run, and RM55 for the 10km Competitive Run.\u00a0 Each registered\u00a0runner is entitled a T-shirt by Newton and a running bib.
