That is slightly more than 70% increment of reported TB cases in the state within a span of 10 years.

Speaking at the 5 KM Run in commemoration of the World TB Day 2019 in Saradise, BDC, Dr. Sim who is the Guest of Honor said TB is one of the deadliest infectious diseases in the world. In 2017, the World Health Organization estimated that 1.6 million people died of TB globally. In 2018, 249 of TB patients reported in Sarawak died associated with TB. This high number of deaths is alarming as TB is curable.

Despite this alarming figures of number of reported TB cases among us in Sarawak, he said, the people must not be misled by misinformation regarding TB as from now on, it is time to demystify this disease.

“All of us gather here early this morning with the realization that it is time for us to make sure that this generation and the next generation are free of this ancient disease. Not only this can cause death, it can cause development of a type of TB infection that is no longer responsive to the current TB drugs.
