Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) is encouraging households under its\u00a0jurisdiction to start separating their waste from the point of\u00a0generation as an effort to minimise waste and creating a more\u00a0environmentally sustainable lifestyle. To make recycling at home more\u00a0convenient, the Council, jointly with Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn. Bhd.,\u00a0recently introduced a six-month pilot project on the kerbside\u00a0recycling collection at Jalan Semaba in December last year.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe would like to urge the residents to take advantage of this service\u00a0because as a community, we definitely can do more to reduce waste and\u00a0improve the household recycling rate in our city,\u201d said MPP Chairman,\u00a0YB Cr. Lo Khere Chiang. \u201cThe service is not only convenient but it\u00a0also helps to minimise waste pollution in the neighbourhood.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs we all know, littering and indiscriminate dumping are becoming\u00a0serious issues in certain parts of the city. One of the ways we can\u00a0prevent this is by taking advantage of the available waste disposal\u00a0and recycling services provided by the Council and Trienekens,\u201d added\u00a0YB Cr. Lo. \u201cThe kerbside recycling collection services enable house\u00a0owners to manage their waste responsibly and have them collected right\u00a0at their doorstep based on fixed schedule.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trienekens\u2019 Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Stephen Chin (\u8a79\u8fd0\u6770)\u00a0also added that since its launching, about 10% of the households in\u00a0Jalan Semaba participated in the pilot project.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is very encouraging and we hope more residents will participate\u00a0in this project as several more collections are already scheduled in\u00a0the coming months. In total, the project has managed to collect about\u00a01,300 kg of recyclables.\u201d explained Chin.<\/p>\n

Currently, the kerbside recycling collection is carried out two times\u00a0a month and included the collection of household e-waste, aluminium,\u00a0plastic, steel, paper and cardboard. Normal household waste disposed\u00a0of in green bins is still collected twice-weekly, according to the\u00a0housing estate\u2019s regular schedule.<\/p>\n

Under the project, residents are requested to separate their household\u00a0waste and pack their recyclables in used plastic bags or boxes, marked\u00a0with the stickers to indicate that the contents are for collection.\u00a0The packed recyclables are then to be left outside the residents\u2019\u00a0houses ready for collection.<\/p>\n

YB Cr. Lo thanked the Jalan Semaba Community Association (\u4e94\u54e9\u516b\u6e2f\u8def\u8054\u8c0a\u4f1a)\u00a0for their support and cooperation in the project and added that the\u00a0project will provide a good opportunity to gauge the community\u2019s\u00a0environmental awareness level and responsiveness towards the service.<\/p>\n
