{"id":20834,"date":"2018-02-01T21:27:08","date_gmt":"2018-02-01T13:27:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.suppnewsportal.com\/main\/?p=20834"},"modified":"2018-02-01T22:19:25","modified_gmt":"2018-02-01T14:19:25","slug":"amendment-to-law-reform-marriage-and-divorce-act","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.suppnewsportal.com\/main\/?p=20834","title":{"rendered":"Amendment to Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Sarawak United People\u2019s Party (SUPP) supports the proposed reintroduction of Clause 88A to amend the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) (Amendment) Act (LRA).<\/p>\n<p>SUPP secretary-general and Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting said this would be consistent with the recent unanimous Federal Court decision against the unilateral conversion of a child to Islam.<\/p>\n<p>He said this in response to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak\u2019s statement that the government is considering amending the law to bring it in line with the court\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p>Ting said the Federal Court\u2019s decision reflected the law, practicality and sensibility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was unanimous and this is important as it reflects the thinking is the same on this issue by the judges at the highest court in the country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said SUPP welcomed the Federal Court\u2019s decision as this was in line with SUPP\u2019s long-standing stance against unilateral conversion.<\/p>\n<p>Clause 88A states that the religion of the child \u2018shall remain as the religion of the parties to the marriage prior to the conversion\u2019 and that the child can, after turning 18 and with the consent of both parents, convert to Islam.<\/p>\n<p>The clause was withdrawn from the Bill to amend the LRA, which was passed by Parliament last August.<\/p>\n<p>The Federal Court\u2019s landmark decision on Monday nullified the unilateral conversion of M Indira Gandhi\u2019s three children \u2013 Tevi Darsiny, 20; Karan Dinish, 19; and Prasana Diksa, 9, \u2013 by her ex-husband K Pathmanathan @ Muhammad Riduan Abdullah in 2009.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.suppnewsportal.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/unnamed.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-20835\" alt=\"unnamed\" src=\"http:\/\/www.suppnewsportal.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/unnamed-300x219.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.suppnewsportal.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/unnamed-300x219.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.suppnewsportal.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/unnamed.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Sarawak United People\u2019s Party (SUPP) supports the proposed reintroduction of Clause 88A to amend the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) (Amendment) Act (LRA).
