SUPP Central Women Section Chairman, Kho Teck Wan expressed shock and strong disagreement at Kelantan PAS preacher AzharIdrus\u2019 statement that \u201cwomen are only worth 15 to 16 ringgit at the age of 28.\u201d In a statement released today, Kho said she condemned Azhar\u2019s blatant sexist remarks and called upon women and men in Malaysia to stand up against such discrimination.<\/p>\n
\u201cSUPP Women find PAS preacher Azhar\u2019s comments highly offensive.\u00a0 Putting a price tag on girls and women is not acceptable. No one has the right to put a dollar value on anyone let alone girls and women. Women are neither slaves nor goods that can be traded. Women of this country are integral to the modern society today as mothers, wives, teachers, doctors, nurses, police, etc. With this,I would also like to urge parents to raise sons to respect women; and to raise daughters to be brave and stand up against injustice. \u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAs our country aspires successful transformation to be a digitally and globally competitive nation, we need to strengthen ourselves towards a progressive, intellectual and orderly society. Women of this country should be very proud of themselves as we play important roles in the household and contributing to society.\u201d Kho added.<\/p>\n
Besides price tagging women, Kho also took great offence at the Pas preacher\u2019s derogatory statements such as, \u201cno one would want to marry a 28 years old women, and even if there were, the woman’s value has dropped.” and \u201cMuslim girls are marriageable at age 15 and Muslim women should not take photos in non-Muslim owned photo studios.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kho also highlighted the Perak Mufti\u2019s clarification that Fatwas can only be issued by muftis, and Azhar\u2019s statement is that of his own personal opinion and not based on any Hadith or the al-Quran.<\/p>\n
Overall, SUPP Women Central finds Azhar\u2019s comments dangerous to Sarawak\u2019s multicultural and multi-religious social fabric.
