First on behalf of\u00a0 the Honourable Minister for Local Government, YB Dr Sim Kui Hian who is unable to be with us today, i wish to extend an apology from the minister and inform that he has kindly requested me to deputise him for this very meaningful event.<\/p>\n

I humbly acknowledge the sacredness of the place upon which we are gathering and pay my respects to Elders,\u00a0 past and present and to all those elders here with us this evening.<\/p>\n

It is a pleasure to be here with you all this evening for the presentation of the 2016 SMMT First Sarawathy Education Award.<\/p>\n

In preparation for this evening, I have done a bit of reflecting on the word \u201cEducation\u201d beforehand. First, from a personal perspective. I have seen very clearly that we are never too old to learn and each day, I am happily and eagerly learning more about all that is important to our State.<\/p>\n

And secondly, directly aligned with that, we as parents, teachers, leaders of a community know just how important education is to every person in Kuching, in the State of Sarawak and also to the wider global community. Education teaches forbearance, respect and tolerance and that contributes significantly to the well being of everyone in Sarawak and in Malaysia.<\/p>\n

Education provides unique social and cultural benefits that are not so easily measured, and yet they are every bit as or more important.<\/p>\n

Regardless of your race or religion your education will contribute to the ongoing development of our unique multiculturalism, an important aspect of our national and, in particular, our State identity. We bring so much to each other from our different races and cultures. And students here contribute so much to the learning of their peers as well.<\/p>\n

Education is not just studying for good academic results. Students from all races learn about the need to respect and love one another and indeed we become a part of our community.<\/p>\n

It means that when we go home, we take with us good work and study ethos and mutual respect for one another in our harmonious society.<\/p>\n

Today, we recognise your hard word, your passion and commitment to excellence, and we thank you for the work that you are doing.<\/p>\n

As you are aware, the main awards this evening are designed for SMMT to recognize and support excellence in the field of education here in Kuching.<\/p>\n

First, we must thank the providers of these outstanding awards, the leaders, benefactors and supporters of Mariamman Temple Kuching.<\/p>\n

Congratulations to the recipients of the SEA awards. Continue to work hard to gain the recognition of such awards. I am very proud of you, as of course, your parents and family members are. Well done, indeed!<\/p>\n

It will be a delight and a pleasure to meet and speak to as many of our recipients and guests here today following this presentation. Thank you again for the honour of your kind invitation today.<\/p>\n
