Batu Kitang State Assemblyman, Lo Khere Chiang congratulated\u00a0 IEM\u00a0(Sarawak Branch) Graduate and Student Section for their hard work and\u00a0success in this year\u2019s event. I have been invited as the Guest of\u00a0Honour for the third consecutive year, and I\u2019m indeed very happy to\u00a0see the growth in participation over the years. This year, the scope\u00a0of the exhibition has definitely been extended and a commendable\u00a0effort has been made in incorporating technical talks on different\u00a0areas of engineering.<\/p>\n

The purpose of this exhibition, as mentioned by the organizing\u00a0chairman, is to promote IEM to the public and to raise public\u00a0awareness on the importance of engineering, as well as to encourage\u00a0students and members of the public to consider engineering as a\u00a0career.<\/p>\n

I understand that the theme of the event this year is \u201cEngineers,\u00a0empowering our nation.\u201d Yes, we are seriously in need of more\u00a0engineers to develop our nation. We need young engineers to take the\u00a0lead and to drive the process.<\/p>\n

Each year during this expo, I try to bring new inspiring messages to\u00a0those who are present, and today, I would like to make an emphasis on\u00a0the importance of innovation in engineering.<\/p>\n

As mentioned before, I\u2019m very pleased that we have a record number of\u00a0engineering related companies participating in this expo this year.<\/p>\n

President Bush once said: \u201cYou can\u2019t do today\u2019s jobs with yesterday\u2019s\u00a0methods and be in business tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n

How many companies have risen and fallen over the past 10 years? If\u00a0technology giants such as Nokia managed to get their core business\u00a0acquired by Microsoft, who is to say that your company will survive in\u00a0the next 10 years?<\/p>\n

During the press conference on the acquisition, the CEO of Nokia\u00a0famously said: \u201cWe didn\u2019t do anything wrong, but somehow, we lost.\u201d<\/p>\n

Those of you here with a good memory may remember the Nokia 3310,\u00a0which was deemed one of the best cell phones ever produced. How did\u00a0Nokia get from being a technology giant to another footnote in the\u00a0history books?<\/p>\n

Ladies and gentlemen, innovation is what set Nokia and the rest of the\u00a0companies which survived apart. Don\u2019t get me wrong, Nokia was a great\u00a0company, but they missed out on opportunities. Their opponents were\u00a0simply too innovative and too powerful for them. The same goes with\u00a0Blackberry. Does anyone of you remember the Blackberry phones?<\/p>\n

Yeah, they can be quoted in the same category as Nokia now. Not only\u00a0did they miss the opportunity to earn big bucks, they lost their\u00a0chance of survival and ended up being swept away by the tidal wave of\u00a0change.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a Chinese proverb that goes: \u201cWhen the winds of change blow,\u00a0some people build walls and others build windmills.\u201d Now, I\u2019m not\u00a0going to touch on building walls, that\u2019s another topic for another\u00a0politician.<\/p>\n

What I encourage each and every one of you present here, especially\u00a0the representatives of the companies participating in this expo, is to\u00a0embrace change. For the students and working adults, if you embrace\u00a0change and improve yourself on a personal level, you are giving\u00a0yourself a second chance.<\/p>\n

If you are reluctant to change, you are doomed for failure. Companies\u00a0that survive embrace change and improve their companies by creating\u00a0new products or by venturing into new markets. By so doing you are\u00a0giving your company a new lease. If you refuse to do so, another\u00a0company will replace you, and you will be left in the office asking\u00a0the question why.<\/p>\n

For many people, innovation is a very vague concept, but in my\u00a0opinion, innovation is transforming new ideas into products and\u00a0services. It\u2019s about converting ideas into reality for common use.<\/p>\n

The car which you drove here with, the little device in your pocket\u00a0right now, and the light shining upon us – these are the results of\u00a0engineers with highly developed innovative skills. According to the\u00a0Global Innovation Index 2016, Malaysia is ranked 35 out of 128, which\u00a0is a reasonable rank. However, I would like to challenge the IEM to\u00a0spearhead the effort to break through the barriers of innovation. And\u00a0only through innovation can we prosper towards becoming a developed\u00a0nation!<\/p>\n

As the Chairman of the Padawan Municipal Council and an engineer\u00a0myself, I am always very supportive of any event which aims to promote\u00a0engineering. In fact, the Padawan Municipal Council is currently in\u00a0the process of signing a Memorandum of Understanding with IEM (Sarawak\u00a0Branch). This will mark the first collaborative effort between a city\u00a0council and IEM in Sarawak, further cementing the strong collaboration\u00a0between the two parties.<\/p>\n
