The motives and demands of the Red Shirts have no merit and are racist in nature.

Calling the rally unnecessarily, Ting said it only fueled increased tension in our nation and promoted hatred and racism. The fact that there were several incidents of violence and confrontations shows that it was not managed or organised well.

Malaysia Day, which marks the formation of the Federation of Malaysia on 16th September 1963 saw the coming together of separate nations with diverse cultures, religions and races with the hope and dreams of building a great Malaysia.

“SUPP has always promoted the model of 1 Malaysia with the universal values of unity, respect, understanding, peace and prosperity for all Malaysians.

We are fortunate that our Chief Minister, YAB Datuk Patinggi Adenan Satem has on many occasions said racists and religious bigots are not welcomed in Sarawak. We fully support his stand.

SUPP supports the rights of Malaysians to express their opinions in the principle of freedom of assembly. However, these rights must not be abused and should be practised peacefully and without the use of threat of violence, intimidation or racism. It is unfortunate that a small hard core group were able to advocate their racist agenda with offensive and racist chanting and placards amongst which were “Malaysia belongs to the Malays”, “Cina Babi” and “Hapuskan SJKC”, he added.

He said as for words “Hapuskan SJKC ” we should always remember that the right of having vernacular schools is clearly enshrined in our Federal Constitution which states that everyone has the right to practise and learn their mother tongue. These schools have been in existence for decades, if not more then a century and they had played an extremely important role in our nation building.

Targeting the Chinese and in particular the Chinese traders at Petaling Street seriously undermines racial unity, peace, harmony and stability.

A repeat of this rally must therefore be stopped because of the genuine fear of racial riots by the Red Shirts people. Such words are seditious in nature with racial undertoned and cannot be excused and are definitely not acceptable in our multi racial, multi religious and our multi cultural nation. Appropriate and stern action must be taken against these racist perpertrators.

The protesters distorted many facts and purposely tried to radicalise issues to increase inter-community tensions.

SUPP supports the statement by Tan Sri Hasmy Agam, the chairman of Malaysia’s Human Rights Commission, who said the commission was “seriously concerned with the expressions of racist ideas” and that these “could likely stir up racial or religious hatred, and may constitute incitement to discrimination, hostility, and violence”.

SUPP reiterates that it is counter productive to organise and allow these Red Shirts rallies.

We further request the relevant authorities should not to allow any rallies which encourages hatred, religious strife and racism by any group.

Our ultimate focus must alway remain on progress in Malaysia via unity, peace ,harmony, respect and understanding.

The whole world is looking at us, he pointed out.

Dato’ Sebastian Ting

Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) urges that all racist and seditious activities by the the ‘Red Shirts’ should be banned once and for all with immediate effect.
