Sarawak United Peoples\u2019 Party (SUPP) has deep reservations about the \u201cRed Shirts\u201d demonstration planned for 16th September on Malaysia Day.<\/p>\n
We strongly believe that Malaysia Day as a national holiday marks the formation of Malaysia and should be given due respect and dignity.<\/p>\n
This is an important day especially for the key states Sarawak and Sabah which played an important role in the formation of Malaysia.<\/p>\n
SUPP believes that activities that encourage understanding, respect and unity are more important.<\/p>\n
The \u201cRed Shirts\u201d demonstration is unnecessary as it does not contribute or serve the greater concept of 1 Malaysia. It is divisive, self-serving and does not bring all the people of Malaysia together.<\/p>\n
These types of demonstrations are not part of the culture of Malaysia. The recent trend of demonstrations and counter demonstrations, whether they be \u2018Yellow Shirts\u2019 or \u2018Red Shirts\u2019 are not conducive to the Malaysian way of life.<\/p>\n
The creation of this type of new negative culture is a slippery slope to chaos and anarchy. We should not emulate the scenario in Thailand, which has led to on-going violence and the unfortunate loss of life.<\/p>\n
These types of demonstrations also give the perception of instability in our country.<\/p>\n
This negative perception will drive away investors and therefore impact negatively on our economy and the creation of new jobs for our people.<\/p>\n
The Police does not support the Red Shirts demonstration and has not given any permit for this rally. Additionally, many other prominent personalities and organisations have also voiced their concerns.<\/p>\n
The organisers of the event are showing a total lack of respect for an important day in our history.<\/p>\n
We are firmly opposed to the \u2018Red Shirts\u2019 demonstration, especially on Malaysia day.<\/p>\n
SUPP hopes the organisers will rethink and cancel the planned demonstration.<\/p>\n
