This will enable all parties to look at the aspects of the Agreement which have not been adhered to.

In a statement issued today, Dato Sebastian clarified that the Agreement relating to Malaysia was drafted on 15 November 1961 and signed on 9 July 1963 in London. It was sealed on 31st July 1963 and became effective from 16th September 1963.

The signatories were the Government of United Kingdom, Government of Malaya, Government of North Borneo, Government of Sarawak and Government of Singapore

It is essential that the Terms and the ‘Spirit of the Agreement” are implemented to the fullest extent. Sarawak has its own character and uniqueness which adds value to the Federation. The full implementation of the Malaysia Agreement will preserve the many aspects of Sarawak’s special identity.

We support the statement by PRS Youth Publicity Chief, Bit Suring that Sarawak and Sabah should enjoy the wealth of the nation equally in accordance with the agreement.

SUPP also backs PRS Party President Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing’s stance that the “agreement remained the basis for the creation of the Federation of Malaysia, and must be honoured”

We further believe that by quickly and effectively implementing all the terms of the Malaysia Agreement, the people will not make any call for succession. The people of Sarawak are fair minded and want to see and enjoy the many economic benefits of being part of the Federation of Malaysia.

The strong show of support to celebrate and commemorate Sarawak Independent Day in Kuching on 22nd July is evident of how much autonomy and fair treatment means to Sarawakians.

SUPP has since its formation pledged to defend and ask for more autonomy for Sarawak, which includes the enforcement of the 18 points.

We still hold on strongly to the notion that Malaysia as a nation was formed of equal partners. Sabah and Sarawak did not join Malaysia. Together with Sabah and Malaya, Sarawak formed Malaysia.

Therefore, by law and implication, we are equal under the constitution. Our Federal political leaders have to understand, respect and honour the agreement.

The “SUPP for Sarawakians” drive within us will be relentless on this matter, to make sure that the original Malaysia Agreement complies with the concept of “Janji ditepati”.

SUPP has since its inception in 1959 steadfastly supported the Sarawak for Sarawakians ideology, meaning Sarawak for Sarawakians first. Therefore, the statement by our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak that the Chief Secretary to the Government of Malaysia, Tan Sri Dr. Ali Hamsa and our Sarawak State Secretary, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Haji Mohamad Morshidi bin Abdul Ghani had already begun discussions to determine “what form of empowerment that we can return to the states” is most welcomed.

We hope both of them make our desire for additional autonomy a priority and that they start rolling out and implementing the areas of empowerment that can be returned to Sarawak as soon as possible.

Dato’ Sebastian Ting

“SUPP will pursue full Implementation of Malaysia Agreement” Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) fully supports the call to revisit the Malaysia Agreement 1963.
