Sarawak Deputy Minister for Tourism, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, has allocated a total of RM230,000 under the 2025 and 2026 Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) to upgrade the drainage system in the Jalan Merbau residential area, aimed at improving drainage and reducing waterlogging for the benefit of residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ting said this during a site visit this morning to inspect two drainage upgrading projects in Jalan Merbau where he noted that both projects are progressing smoothly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the first project, funded with RM80,000 under the 2026 RTP, involves the upgrading of an 84-metre drainage channel. Construction began on May 23 this year and is scheduled for completion on July 22. The project is now nearing completion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second project, funded with RM150,000 under the 2025 RTP, involves upgrading a 153-metre drainage system. Work also commenced on May 23, with a three-month construction period and an expected completion date of Aug 22.
According to a briefing by engineers from the Miri City Council, the 153-metre drainage project is now more than 80 per cent complete, with overall progress described as satisfactory and likely to be finished ahead of schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ting thanked the contractor for its commitment to the project and commended the Miri City Council, as the implementing agency, for closely monitoring the work to ensure it progresses smoothly and is completed on time or even ahead of schedule.
He said the upgraded drainage system will significantly improve water flow in the residential area, enhance the safety and comfort of the living environment, and help resolve long-standing drainage issues faced by residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ting added that some of the drains in Jalan Merbau had deteriorated over the years, affecting residents’ daily lives as well as environmental cleanliness and public safety. He therefore secured RTP funding to carry out the upgrading works and improve the community’s drainage infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
