{"id":34066,"date":"2025-09-28T12:46:15","date_gmt":"2025-09-28T04:46:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.suppnewsportal.com\/main\/?p=34066"},"modified":"2025-10-31T12:51:48","modified_gmt":"2025-10-31T04:51:48","slug":"supp-urges-federal-government-to-restore-sarawaks-constitutional-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.suppnewsportal.com\/main\/?p=34066","title":{"rendered":"SUPP urges Federal Government to restore Sarawak\u2019s constitutional rights"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sarawak United Peoples\u2019 Party (SUPP) Secretary-General Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew has called on the Federal Government to act on proposals made by the Governor of Sarawak, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, during the Statesman\u2019s Lecture at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) on September 26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe congratulate and thank His Excellency for delivering such an insightful lecture, which gave profound interpretations on the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), the Inter-Governmental Committee Report, and the Cobbold Commission Report,\u201d Ting said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He noted that Wan Junaidi, during his time as Federal Minister in the Prime Minister\u2019s Department, had successfully tabled the Federal Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2021 in Parliament to incorporate MA63 into the Federal Constitution. \u201cHis knowledge and leadership on constitutional rights continue to benefit Sarawak,\u201d Ting added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ting stressed that SUPP fully supports the Governor\u2019s proposal for the Federal Government to return powers that Sarawak enjoyed prior to 1985, such as the authority to appoint judicial commissioners. \u201cRestoring these rights is a matter of constitutional entitlement and justice,\u201d he said, urging the Federal Government to include this in ongoing MA63 negotiations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also highlighted the need for Sarawak to have greater control over citizenship matters, particularly to resolve the issue of stateless children. \u201cSUPP has handled countless cases involving stateless children.
