KUCHING: SUPP Secretary-General Datuk Sebastian Ting has expressed full support for the recently signed Joint Declaration between Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Prime Minister Dato\u2019 Seri Anwar Ibrahim, calling it a landmark step in redefining federal-state relations, especially in the governance of natural resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking at a press conference, Ting commended Premier Abang Johari for his comprehensive and forward-looking winding-up speech in the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly, particularly his emphasis on the Joint Declaration signed on May 21 in Kuala Lumpur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSarawak is indeed very fortunate to be led by a wise, diligent, and visionary leader. Our Premier has spent countless hours planning and negotiating with the Federal Government, always with Sarawak\u2019s interests at heart,\u201d Ting said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He stressed that the agreement reflects the essence of the GPS Government\u2019s “Sarawak First” policy and reinforces the state’s commitment to upholding Sarawak\u2019s rights and autonomy as enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963, the Inter-Governmental Committee Report, the Sarawak Constitution, and the Federal Constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On behalf of SUPP and fellow state assemblypersons, Ting congratulated both the Premier and the Prime Minister on reaching the milestone agreement. He described the Joint Declaration as a model of federal-state cooperation, achieved through mutual respect and constructive engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added that the Petronas-Petros arrangement is a true \u2018win-win\u2019 outcome, grounded in shared understanding and respect for each party\u2019s rights and responsibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the heart of the declaration, he said Petros is recognized as the sole gas aggregator in Sarawak, with full authority over the procurement, distribution, and sale of natural gas\u2014aligned with the state\u2019s Distribution of Gas Ordinance 2016. Meanwhile, Petronas retains its national role under the Petroleum Development Act 1974, with all its existing domestic and international obligations remaining intact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis agreement allows both federal and state laws\u2014the PDA 1974 and DGO 2016\u2014to coexist respectfully. It provides legal clarity and strengthens investor confidence,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ting stressed that the declaration empowers Sarawak to manage its own gas reserves, which account for more than 60 percent of Malaysia\u2019s total. With control over gas distribution, Sarawak will be able to attract downstream investments, stimulate job creation, and drive economic diversification in line with its long-term goal of becoming a clean energy hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also highlighted potential collaborative efforts between Petronas and Petros, including developments under the Sarawak Gas Roadmap, hydrogen production, and green energy initiatives, which would enhance Sarawak\u2019s position as a regional energy hub within ASEAN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis balanced and strategic agreement is an important step toward realizing Sarawak\u2019s aspirations for greater autonomy and equitable development. We remain committed to supporting its implementation for the benefit of all Sarawakians,\u201d said Ting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
