He stated that 1,500 selected were from 12,000 applicants of the number, 300 were assigned to secondary schools and the rest primary schools.

The shortage of teachers has been ongoing for years and our requests and pleas appeared not to be heard by the Federal government.

Calling on the government agencies in the education field in both State and Federal to coordinate, Lo said without proper coordination, shortage of teachers in Sarawak is overlooked for a long time.

“The best is to return the autonomy of Education back to Sarawak as we know best what are the needs of the teachers and the students here. Education is the foundation to foster future leaders and I believe we Sarawakians know what we need. We can come up with our own education program and development to ensure the growth of our future generation,” he said.

Lo pointed out that the Sarawak government emphasised strongly on education knowing well that it is the key to be a successful state with majority smart educated Sarawakians .

“Otherwise where in other states in Malaysia do you have any government providing free tertiary education as what our GPS government is going to do by year 2026. We are proud to say we are the first State to do so,” he said.

On the new placement to address teacher shortage in Sarawak, Lo said the shortage should not be filled up to please the state. He said we need quality, good teachers to teach the students well.

So far as of Nov last year, the total recruitment was 41,125 against the needed 23,334 vacancies. With the new replacement there is still a shortage of 837 teachers that need to be filled.

“I hope that the Education Ministry will hasten the procedure of getting quality teachers for Sarawak. Otherwise, it is just better to hand over the Education autonomy back to us and let us worry about it instead of the Federal Education department delaying the process,” he added.

Lo also emphasised that the formation of Malaysia should be made a mandatory subject in schools and universities so that all Malaysians can understand the significance of Malaysia Agreement 1963 and the Special rights of Sabah and Sarawak.

With the recruitment of at least 1,500 new teachers who will be reporting for duty in Sarawak in the middle of January, it is high time, shortage of teachers in the state is being addressed, especially those in the rural area.
