Lo questioned Chong\u2019s stance, pointing out that as a federal MP and a senior member of the Pakatan Harapan-led Unity Government, he has direct access to key decision-makers in Putrajaya. Instead of using his platform to advocate for Sarawak\u2019s rights, Chong appears more focused on criticizing GPS, Lo argued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBy taking this approach, Chong risks weakening Sarawak\u2019s bargaining power. If he is truly committed to defending Sarawak\u2019s interests, why not leverage his federal influence to advance Sarawak\u2019s case? Why not push for meaningful dialogue that ensures Sarawak\u2019s rightful stake in its own resources, rather than undermining those actively working toward that goal?\u201d he questioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe issue is not GPS or Abang Jo\u2014it is Putrajaya\u2019s reluctance to acknowledge Sarawak\u2019s rights over its resources,\u201d Lo asserted. He reminded that Sarawak has never sought to disrupt existing contracts with Petronas or international investors but remains firm in asserting its authority over oil and gas resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also clarified that Sarawak understands the need for the Petroleum Development Act 1974 (PDA 74) to coexist with the Oil Mining Ordinance 1958 (OMO 58) for now to ensure stability in the industry. However, under the Sarawak Sales Tax Ordinance and in line with OMO 58, Petronas is required to remit a 5% sales tax on petroleum products to Sarawak\u2014a position affirmed by the Federal Court in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lo further dismissed accusations from the Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak that GPS leaders were responsible for past federal decisions regarding Sarawak\u2019s resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHow old were most of the present GPS leaders when the Petroleum Development Act (PDA) 1974 was passed? Some of them were very young politicians, and others were just kids! What could they have done at the time?\u201d Lo said. \u201cHistory cannot be changed\u2014but the future can be fought for, and that is exactly what the present leadership in GPS is doing today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
