The affected residents have also requested for scheduled periodic maintenance and clearing of the earth drains to alleviate ponding and flash flooding.

As a temporary measure, Yap wrote to Kuching City South Council and Drainage & Irrigation Department requesting that the authorities urgently address the predicament faced by residents at Lorong 10A through the construction of a culvert at the entrance of Lorong 10A to improve water flow and drainage which will prevent ponding and flash flooding after heavy rains.

He said Stampin Resettlement Scheme was first populated more than 30 years ago and it is only appropriate and right that the Kuching City South Council and Drainage & Irrigation Department should jointly decide on a long term solution for the flash flooding, drainage and stormwater management problems in the area through a Drainage Master Development Plan. This Master Plan is vital for Kuching City South Council and Drainage & Irrigation Department to serve as a basis to secure development funds from the Federal or Sarawak Government.

The Master Plan also serves to identify existing and potential problems and formulate a systematic implementation of drainage related development projects to eliminate or reduce the adverse effects of flooding, which in turn will provide an appropriate level of flood protection and resolve the problems of the dilapidated drainage situation which is long outstanding in the area.

Yap added that the frustration of residents of Stampin Resettlement Scheme on the dilapidated condition of the earth drains in the area. It is indeed disappointing that the drains on both sides of Jalan Stampin Baru till today are still earth drains and are in urgent need of upgrading from earth to concrete drains.

Wilfred Yap together with community leaders and residents at Lorong 10A, Stampin Resettlement Scheme

Houses in Stampin Baru were clogged with water causing soil erosion due to overgrown weeds. SUPP Public Complaints Bureau (PCB) Chief cum Kota Sentosa Branch Chairman, Wilfred Yap during a recent “turun padang” acitivity with community leaders and SUPP members at Lorong 10A, Jalan Stampin Baru, received complaints from residents on the issue. He said the overgrown weeds and excess eroded earth in the drains inevitably affect water flow and which cause water ponding and flash flooding during heavy rain.
