In his answers to foreign investors, Dr Mahathir stated that Sarawak is the richest state in Malaysia with a budget of RM11 billion compared with other states.

“I would like to thank the Prime Minister of Malaysia for his vote of confidence in Gabungan Parti Sarawak. However, Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad’s confidence in the economy status and governance of Sarawak under GPS is contrary to the concerns expressed by his cabinet member, the Malaysia Minister of Finance YB Lim Guan Eng, and the Malaysia Assistant Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumerism YB Chong Chien Jen, “she said.

The Malaysia Minister of Finance YB Lim Guan Eng had warned Sarawakians in June last year that with the state budget of RM11 billions and state reserve at RM 31 billion, Sarawak will goes bankrupt in 3 years’ time.

When asked to comment on the Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg’s 2020 budget in November 2019, YB Chong Chien Jen echoed YB Lim’s warning by stating that Sarawak is heading down the path of bankruptcy if continued to be ruled by GPS.

Kho pointed out that GPS’s prudent spending and governance earned global confidence when S&P Global Ratings affirmed its ‘A-‘ rating on Sarawak with stable earnings outlook in December 2020.

Sarawakian and Malaysian, she said in general should evaluate Sarawak’s financial performance based on its international credit rating. Baseless bankruptcy warnings made by the Finance Minister of Malaysia as well as YB Chong, who is a Sarawakian himself, are a selfish act. Their actions clearly proofed that these YBs are characters who is willing to sacrifice Sarawak’s potential earning and reputation, merely for their short term political gains.

“Instead of trying to sabotage Sarawak’s financial status, I would like to urge YB Chong to focus on realizing the Pakatan Harapan’s promises to Sarawak which are to give 20% oil royalty, to return the 50% tax collected back to Sarawak, and to return the autonomies of education and medical back to Sarawak, “she added.

During the recent dialogue session organised by the Malaysian French Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Cyberjaya, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has assured foreign investors that the ongoing tussle between the federal government, Sabah and Sarawak can be ironed out, said SUPP Woman Chief, Kho Teck Wan. Therefore, Kho said investors should invest in both Sabah and Sarawak as both have good governance.
