Piasau State Assemblyman, Datuk Sebastian Ting welcomes the statement\u00a0of Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir who said in Sabah\u00a0on Sunday\u00a0that\u00a0Pakatan government would restore the status of equal partners to Sabah\u00a0and Sarawak but would wait until PH regained two-third majority in\u00a0Parliament.<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister said that this was part of the process that would\u00a0be implemented once the review on the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63)\u00a0has been completed.<\/p>\n

Rather than waiting for PH to get two-third majority, Ting said the\u00a0matter should be brought to Parliament for amendment and allowed the\u00a0MPs to vote for it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am sure that all MPS from both divides in Sabah and Sarawak will\u00a0vote positively for the amendment as this is what Sabahans and\u00a0Sarawakians are fighting for.”<\/p>\n

Ting who is Sarawak United Peoples\u2019 Party (SUPP) Secretary general,\u00a0said SUPP hopes that the review of MA 63 will not take too long and\u00a0should be completed as soon as possible as Sarawakians and Sabahans\u00a0are anxiously waiting and indeed shall be looking forward to have\u00a0their rights back as contained in MA63<\/p>\n

He called on Sarawak and Sabah MPs to take the proactive action to\u00a0table the proposed Amendment of the Federal Constitution.<\/p>\n

If the PH-led Federal government does not table this amendment Bill in\u00a0the coming Parliament sitting then any of the GPS MPs from Sarawak can\u00a0do so. \u201cI am sure that all MPs from Sarawak and Sabah will support\u00a0the proposed amendment since it is good for Sarawak and Sabah.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is our hope that such Constitutional amendment can be completed as\u00a0soon as possible so Sarawak and Sabah can get its proper respect and\u00a0be treated as equal partners to the Peninsular as intended in the\u00a0Malaysia Agreement.<\/p>\n

From what Tun Mahathir had said, Ting pointed out that, it indeed\u00a0reflected a scenario that Sabah and Sarawak were not treated as equal\u00a0partners since formation of Malaysia in 1963.\u00a0 \u201cI must say that indeed\u00a0Sabahans and Sarawakians felt so and continue to have this feeling of\u00a0being unfairly treated all these years.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is likely the reason\/basis of unhappiness and to certain extend\u00a0anger against Federal Government by the people of Sabah and Sarawak.\u00a0This unhappiness and emotions are always very high during this\u00a0September month of each year.<\/p>\n

Some Sabahans and Sarawakians go to the street each year on the 16th\u00a0September for a peaceful and orderly walk about.<\/p>\n

While pending the full study on MA 63, Cobbold Commission, Inter\u00a0Governmental Commission Report and Malaysia Act 1963 ( Chapter 35) and\u00a0other relevant minutes of meetings, leading to the formation of\u00a0Malaysia,\u00a0 Ting hopes that the first right thing to do is to amend Article 1 (2)\u00a0of the Federal Constitution to state that Malaysia shall consist of<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0 Federal States of Malaya,<\/p>\n

2. Sabah and<\/p>\n

3. Sarawak.<\/p>\n

Ting pointed out that when Malaysia was formed on the 16th September\u00a01963, Malaysia was stated as<\/p>\n

A.\u00a0 \u00a0 Federated States of Malaya.<\/p>\n

B.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 North Borneo ( as Sabah was known at that time)<\/p>\n

C.\u00a0 \u00a0 Sarawak and<\/p>\n

D.\u00a0 \u00a0 Singapore ( which was later separated in 1965)<\/p>\n

Calling for the facts of the formation of Malaysia to\u00a0 be properly and\u00a0accurately recorded so that our younger generation know of the\u00a0history, Ting said the most next important thing is to amend and\u00a0change the present History books. The future generation must know the\u00a0real history of Malaysia and not one that is totally wrong, and this\u00a0has been going on for the past 55 years.\u00a0 \u201cThe Minister of Education\u00a0should be proactive and brave enough to take this up immediately and\u00a0on urgent basis”. he said.<\/p>\n

Ting believed that with such development, Sabah and Sarawak wil be\u00a0given appropriate attention to improve the basic infrastructures which\u00a0are\u00a0 so lagging behind those in Peninsula Malaya, amongst\u00a0 a horde of\u00a0other rights that should be restored.<\/p>\n

SUPP again wishes all Malaysians a Happy Malaysia Day with Peace,\u00a0Unity and Harmony to all of us.<\/p>\n
