Chairperson of Sarawak United Peoples\u2019 party (SUPP) Kuching branch,\u00a0Datuk Lily Yong said the party is taking the initiative and responsibility to organise a three-day celebration for the party\u2019s 58th anniversary.<\/p>\n

She said Kuching branch has about 8,000 members, half of whom are\u00a0elderly cadres.<\/p>\n

Lily, who is also a vice-president of the party, is not fearful of courting controversy and said the party has not been doing well during the internal conflicts but during the last State election, they had recaptured some of the seats although she said the party could have done better. \u201cIf we had done wrong, there is no harm to tell the people so and apologized,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She added that the three day celebration is not going to bring back\u00a0voters just like that and that the journey ahead to win back the\u00a0support like in the past need a concerted effort from all 50 branches\u00a0in Sarawak.<\/p>\n

Her party President, Senator Datuk Dr. Sim Kui Hian,\u00a0 is working very hard to achieve support from the people. Despite a few doing their part, she felt that much more should be done, even the branches where they failed to capture the seats as Dr. Sim seems to be at it alone. \u201cIt does not mean that you lost and you completely give\u00a0up. We msut have perseverance and persistence when it comes to\u00a0politics. We need to strive on and to capture the hearts of the\u00a0people. At the moment, we are still far from achieving our desired\u00a0target,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Kuching branch used to be the second oldest branch in Sarawak after\u00a0Sibu SUPP and is now the oldest branch. It was formed on June 29th\u00a01959. Sibu branch has been split into a few branches now.<\/p>\n

Her branch, she said is not superstitious and the number 58th is not what prompted her to celebrate the anniversary on a grander scale but\u00a0more of the necessity for the party. \u201cIt is also a recognition for the\u00a0party members especially the older cadres who had contributed a lot to\u00a0the party. They have the influence, the networking and the younger\u00a0generation needs to work with them to achieve more,\u201d she pointed out.<\/p>\n

Reminding the younger generation not to forget and appreciate how the\u00a0older cadres fought to keep the party strong, Lily said she was pleased that a number of elderly cadres have bought tickets for the highlight of the celebrationthis Saturday as they so much want to be part of the party.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
