I like to thank the Organisers for their efforts and the invited speakers who agreed to speak on the subject.

At this point in time, I have not yet receive the report of the Organisers for the event as well as the records of the speeches and feedback made by the speakers and participants other than what I had read from the press reports of the event. Those comments and feedback that are realistic in nature will be up for consideration by the delegates and leaders of the Party at the up-coming Triennial Delegates Conference 2014. To this extent, therefore, the Forum is timely.

Although we have in the midst of the organisers the presence of Datuk Lily Yong, one of the four SUPP Central Vice Chairman cum Chairman of the SUPP Kuching Branch, I wish to state categorically that SUPP had made significant contributions to the development of Sarawak. SUPP had for many years put up very credible performances in past state and parliament elections since it became a component party in the Barisan Nasional. Comparing to its glorious past, I do admit that the SUPP fared a downhill trend with the election losses of 2006, 2011 and 2013.

Admittedly, SUPP is at its weakest in terms of elected representatives. However, as to the reasons for being in this weak position, I would say that there are various contributory factors. Though there exists a perception amongst some quarters that SUPP had not been vocal enough to raise issues of public concern to the authorities concerned, I have to reject the view that SUPP had to “kow tow” to BN leaders on issues affecting the public, particularly on issues affecting the Chinese community. Leaders of SUPP, who participated in the Barisan Nasional State and Federal government levels, have always adhere to the principle of consultations within the coalition. SUPP have persistently and constantly raised issues of public interests within the BN and the government. Of course, not all matters were concluded with positive outcomes. However, through this process SUPP had achieved much by influencing the policies of the Government at State and Federal levels ever since the Party became part of the Barisan Nasional. I agree, however, this perception that SUPP leaders “kow tow” to BN leaders has to be rectified and should not be allowed to persist.

SUPP is still an important and useful political party. Like any organisation, there are always “ups and downs”; however, as an established, experienced and the oldest political party in Sarawak, SUPP provides the mechanism by which people of all backgrounds can be actively involved in the task of shaping policies for the further development of our country. With the support of the electorate in Sarawak for our emerging new generation of leaders as legislators, SUPP can bounce back to become an effective partner to represent the interests of Sarawakians within the Barisan Nasional government.

“The Forum 2014: The Relevancy of SUPP” held on 16th March, 2014 in Kuching at the Hilton Hotel, Kuching was commendable for the sizeable participants and audience who turned up to support the event.
