State Assemblyman for Piasau, Dato Sebastian is\u00a0encouraging the private sector to be involved and make a\u00a0difference to the community especially where environment issue is\u00a0concerned.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the tree planting event yesterday morning at Miri Piasau\u00a0Boat club, Ting pointed out that the event is a significant one as it\u00a0involved both Government and private sectors to make a better Miri.<\/p>\n

He said environment issue is something closed to his heart and meant a\u00a0lot to him as he is familiar with Piasau Nature reserve and the need\u00a0to protect the environment.<\/p>\n

“Today, we are doing more than just talking, we are taking actions and\u00a0leading by examples – by planting a tree, we are\u00a0giving this world a new phase of life..<\/p>\n

We have repeatedly talked about our desire to plant trees in order to\u00a0slow down global warming and restore ecosystems worldwide. These are\u00a0important benefits of tree planting, but there are other benefits that\u00a0are much harder to measure but whose impact is no less important.<\/p>\n

These are the socioeconomic benefits that trees bring to the\u00a0communities where they are planted.<\/p>\n

For simplicity, let us call these effects the \u201cmeasurable effects\u201d.<\/p>\n

There are broadly three types of measurable effects of trees: those\u00a0effects that benefit individuals, those that benefit firms, and those\u00a0that benefit taxpayers (that is both individuals and firms).<\/p>\n

For \u201cnone measurable effects\u201d, where the nature can give us a sense of\u00a0serenade calmness, harmony and peace. Trees act as sound barriers to\u00a0reduce noise pollution. A single tree produces approximately 260\u00a0pounds of oxygen per year. That means two mature trees can supply\u00a0enough oxygen annually to support a family of four,” he added.<\/p>\n

Trees also absorb carbon-dioxide. They purify the air. They\u00a0maintain balance of gases in air. Thus they control air-pollution.<\/p>\n

They attract rain. It is very important for our agriculture. Their\u00a0roots hold the soil together. They prevent soil-erosion and maintain\u00a0fertility of land. They are the natural habitat of many animals and\u00a0birds and offer us cool shade during summer. Trees are valuable\u00a0natural resource. We should conserve them with great care.<\/p>\n

He also encouraged children on the importance of taking\u00a0care of environment and to love them as they would be the one to need\u00a0it in the future.<\/p>\n
