Approve the funding, we will build affordable housing, Federal Minister told
Sarawak Government was surprised by the local media reports today made by the Minister of Local Government and Housing, YB Hjh. Zuraida Kamaruddin in Sibu on the “Sarawak Government yet to hand over land for affordable housing projects.
According to YB Hjh. Zuraida, all other states in the country have given the identified land for the ministry to build houses except for Sarawak, said Local Government and Housing Minister, Datuk Dr. SIM Kui Hian.
He said her last visit in Sarawak was in June last year where Housing Development Corporation (HDC) presented 10 pieces of state land to the KPKT involving a total of 1,223 acres of land throughout Sarawak to build about 12,000 units of affordable housing but to-date none has been approved by the new federal government. HDC has not received any news so far.
Hence, the Sarawak Chief Minister, YAB Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Abg Jo decided to have 2,500 units of our own Sarawak affordable Houses for 2019-2020, including continuing PPR Tabuan Melayu project which was withdrawn from KPKT project list under the new government.
Dr.Sim said among the project undertaken by the Sarawak government is in Miri where it was also part of the land banks proposed for KPKT to build affordable housing.
He added that the state government is fully aware of the KPKT affordable housing project on private land in Sarawak. To-date there are two, one in Seduan, Sibu and another in Matang, Kuching. Both of this project are not in the HDC’s project list.
Land matter is under the state jurisdiction and therefore all planning pertaining to any housing development will be under the authority of the state. The Sarawak Government hopes that the federal government will understand that SPA is in charge of overall planning and decide where the houses to be build.
The state government hoped that federal government can work together with Sarawak Government so that we can carry the shared responsibilities under the concurrent list of Federal Constitution.
