Kho Teck Wan grateful motion approved for Constutituional Amendment

SUPP Woman Chief, Kho Teck Wan said it is ironic that the Federal constitution of Malaysia, which is the supreme law of Malaysia doesn’t mention Malaysia Agreement 1963.

The article 160 (2) of the Federal Constitution defined Federation as the Federation established under the Malaya Agreement 1957.

“How can Pakatan Harapan’s Constitutional Amendment 2019 a form of sincerity and is the first step toward equal status, when the amendment further affirmed Sarawak as one of the states in the Federation of Malaya? If we want to change, then make it right, not change for the sake of changing,” she said.

Kho expressed her relief that Sarawak Legislative Assembly unanimously approved the motion on Constitutional Amendment on state’s rights on April 30th 2019. The motion passed in Sarawak Legislative Assembly proposed to amend Article 1(2) of the Federal Constitution by inserting “pursuant to Malaysia Agreement 1963”; it also proposed to amend the definition of “Federation” under 160(2) to the Federation established under the Malaysia Agreement signed on July 9, 1963; and definition of “Malaysia Day” to September 16, 1963.

She added that these are very important amendments, “I think Sarawak law makers had done the homework for Sabah and the Minister of Law; and I hope the Sabah MPs and PH MPs will agree with the amendments when they are tabled in the Parliament later. Our generation were not present in 1963, nor were we in the Parliament in 1976; however, we are here today to correct the wrongs. And let’s put aside our political differences and be united in safeguarding Sarawak for our future generation. Everyone is a winner when we do this right,” she said.
